Requiem for Dhuluaya "Requiem for Dhuluaya" was first shown at a solo exhibit at the William Blizard Gallery at Springfield College in Springfield, MA. Now in the private collection of Dr. Paige Smith of upstate NY, the piece incorporates a map of Iraq, a photo of one of the Dhuluaya farmers surveying the downed date palms, orange and lemon peels and seeds, charcoal, and encaustic wax colored with spices used in Iraqi cooking. Gibson also incorporated Arabic calligraphy done by friend Heather Damon which included the words Allah, peace, lemon, love, gratitude, build, orange, orchard, grow, farmer, life, human being, livelihood, goodness, thankful, food, family, earth, farm, work, health, and hope. |
